31 Days of Need Not Want
In the spirit of Crazy Aunt Pearl's commitment to not buying extraneous items, I wanted to give it a go. So today (to start my 31st year) I'm pledging 31 days of not buying anything I don't NEED. This is going to be tough for me. I'm the girl who throws an extra chapstick into every grocery order. It is a very bad habit. Time to break that one...
The Rules of Control the Clutter...
1. Every single time I lay out money for ANYTHING I will ask, do I NEED this. If the answer is no, there will be no purchase.
2. Food is OK. But candy is not. And "extras" like Starbucks, Jamba, and eating out will be seriously examined.
3. No cosmetics, clothes, or office supplies.
4. Especially... NO YARN!!!
5. Use what I have. No need to buy more just because of nice packaging, pretty colors, or any other marketing trick.
This lasts at least until October 8. I promise to fess up if I mess up. But I'm committed to giving this an honest try. Want in????

You are brave!! I know I'd fall flat on my face in no time. I don't have much in the way of disposable income, but no YARN??!!
Here's wishing you the best of luck. It's noble!
Good luck! That kind of thing is HARD. But I have found that telling everyone your resolutions helps them a lot, so you're on the right track!
I'm gonna give it a hearty go!
I might go along with you on this, but might start a bit later in the month. I'm going through some cruddy stuff right now and feel the need for a facial and some nice new skincare products.
jeez, a bandwagonI so need to get on. I'll be thinking on this one and wacthing your selfless progress! Good luck!
So I ready that today you are starting your 31st year... Happy Birtdhay! Good for you on the being strong and exercising that Iron Will!
Congrats!
No freakin' way! I'm going to CA Wool & Fiber Fest in Boonville on Friday. :)
I think I can try. I will do my best starting tomorrow as I already had the licorice today. This is going to be difficult, but I think I can, I think I can...
Well, since I'm going to Oregon Flock & Fiber in a few weeks, can't do it! But I will say, in preparation for going, I've tried to really really look at all the "extras" I buy. My goal for the month of September was writing down EVERY purchase just to see where the money went. That alone is helping me cut back!
Boy, I just about did that over the past month! Except I did snag a skein of Wollmeise that I coudn't pass up. My problem is that I have far too often exceeded my needs and physical space-which is why I have even less space! I commend you, oh mighty Chicken!
Gosh, I've been wanting to do this for awhile, but we are headed on vacation tomorrow (without children), so I'm sitting this one out, but will be trying it at some point this year.
I, too am sick of being ruled by stuff!
You go girl!
Good luck...that sounds hard! Little things always hop in my cart especiallly with an eleven year old!:) Plus we're going on vacation...gotta get souveniers...especially souvenier yarn! hugs
I'd love to see you try, can you resist new lovely soft yarn??? Or office supplies or cosmetics? I can't *)
Let's not start with Starbucks, which I'm a sucker for x)
Good luck on your quest!
With minor exceptions (like the entire month of August!) my spare spending is ingrained after a lifetime of low cash flows. I live vicariously through you and my other fav bloggers.
With that said, if I spend more money this upcoming month I'll just have to blame you. :-O.
That is such a great idea, good luck and keep us posted ... I might think about doing this.
Been saving for a vacation, so I have been doing this for a while. I can't wait to spend a little frivolously. Not sure if I will be able to after this.
Good luck! You can do it.
Let me know if this diet makes you a bit blue. THe Yarn diet I've been on most of the year leaves me a bit........I dont know.......blue sometimes! Im glad Im using stash and knitting up some great yarns that have been waiting in the wings.....but I MISS the thrill of the NEW yarn purchases.......
I cannot wait to read to see if this worked for you.
I tried this in March of this past year (2008) (http://knitpurlknitpearl.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html)
It was HARD let me tell you. I was still allowed to buy groceries or medicine (I think either Sean or I got sick in that month and needed meds) and I was allowed to make business purchases (can't run a business without that), but otherwise, I don't know if I'd do it again, it was SUPER freakin' hard!
GO YOU!
