Goals Update- Week 17

Let's jump right in...

1. Thin for Thirty- No progress even though I've walked 25 miles this month. I'm stressed with the work/school transition. And food is my friend- especially Mexican food. :)

2. Save Money- Things are good here. On track for going to school.

3. Knit from the Stash- The great stock up is done. I'm really feeling guilty about my stash now. There will be no more purchases for a while. There's no reason to buy more. I have a lovely stash and I need to use it. After all, what good is beautiful yarn if it just sits in a plastic tub in my closet.

4. Grad School- I'm resigning from work a week from Tuesday. I'm really nervous about the conversation I'm going to have with my boss. I hope she'll be supportive. But I realize this puts her in a difficult position and I'm preparing for the worst.

I also got my schedule for the summer. It's going to be an adjustment. Some days are 7-4. Some days are 2-11. Luckily, I got a clinical site near my house. But my in hospital training won't start until July. Thank goodness. Although I've taken many pre-requisite courses, I don't feel prepared to handle actual patients just yet. However, I did cut my finger today while searching for a wayward dpn. With no bandaids in the house, I bound my finger with cotton and duct tape. Nurse MacGyver at your service!

That's about it from here. I got my sock mojo back this weekend. One green Baudelaire done. And I'm on the gusset of my second Moorish Lattice sock. I keep telling myself I can't cast on for my Clapotis until these two socks are done. So far, that's working. But I know myself. I won't hold out for long. The STR heavyweight in Lucy is calling me.

Saturday Spoilers

ATTENTION!!!! There are Rockin' Sock and Scout's Swag spoilers in this post. Don't read on if you don't want to know!

First, I have to tell you about the crazy dream I had. I was just starting nursing school. There had been 2 or 3 classes and the teachers pulled me aside for a serious talk. They told me that they wanted me to quit the program because I wasn't able to crochet. I even had to bring samples of my needle work up to the front of the class where the professor told me it was all wrong. The kept saying, "We don't think you'll make it through the year. You don't think three dimensionally." And the whole time I was pleading, "But I can knit! I can knit!!!! I'll learn to crochet. There have only been 2 classes!!!" I think I'm a little nervous about this school thing. And I might have to whip up a granny square, just in case.

I also finished one of my Baudelaire socks this afternoon. It's a little tight going over my heel. But once it's on it is very comfy. And the lace looks very fancy. I did do one of the cables in the wrong direction but I'm leaving it. It doesn't bother me. All Brian said was, "Wow, those are really green." It's Sunshine yarn in Avocado. My SP package got me thinking green again!

Sunshine Yarn Avocado

OK- On to the spoilers!

The April shipment of the Rockin' Sock Club came on Thursday. I could not be happier. It's so pretty. And not only is the colorway new, the yarn is new too!!!

STR Silkie- Walking on the Wild Tide

It's STR Silkie- 81% Superwash Merino, 19% Silk- in Walking on the Wild Tide. I love the barber pole effect of the yarn. And the silk gives it such a nice shine. I have to clear some needles more quickly for this one.

My Scout's Indie Swag Club package was jammed into my tiny mailbox yesterday when I got home from work. Good thing yarn is squishy!

Scout's Swag- Lavender Mint

It's 100% Superwash BFL in Lavender Mint. I love this color way. (I'm on a bit of a purple kick lately.) I've also seen the reskeined version of this yarn and the colors blend really well.

Also in the package was Heal My Hands lotion bar, lip balm, and face mask. I've really been wanting to try this. The lotion bar contains lanolin and, for me, the smell of the lanolin overpowers the intended Lavender Mint scent. It doesn't smell bad. I'd just like to be able to smell more of the lavender since it's one of my favorites. There's no doubt this stuff will fix and dry hands or feet. It's really thick and moisturizing. I'm going to slather my flip flop feet in it before I go to bed.

Have you seen The Last King of Scotland? If not, you should go rent it. Forest Whitaker is amazing and the movie gives an interesting point of view on the Ugandan regime of Idi Amin. It's violent but it gives you a good look at what happened.

Hope you're having a restful Saturday.

I Got Interviewed!

Thank you for all the nice comments on the BMFA yarn. I'm so in love with it! The heavyweight Lucy will become a Clapotis. The silkmo in Stormy Weather will be a Lily Chin Reversible Rib Shawl from Vogue Knitting- Winter 99/00. The medium weights will be paired up together for a couple more Chevron Scarves. At least that's the plan right now. Although, knitting plans change all the time.

Jo at Wild Peculiar Joy had a great meme on her blog. So I had to get in on it.

These are the questions she has for me.

1) Who is your favorite literary character and why?

Scout from To Kill A Mockingbird. She's an old soul.

2) What dish do you consider to be your specialty?

I make a mean Pad Thai. I'm actually a better baker than cook. (A fact Brian can heartily attest to.) My best baking- Carmel brownies. They are always a hit.

3) What is your most favorite and least favorite season and why?

In California, I don't really experience the seasons the way I did growing up in the Midwest. Overall, I love fall- when the weather changes and there's a brisk chill in the air. I call it sweater weather. Or football weather. To me, there's nothing more fun than watching a college football game wearing a tweed sweater and drinking a beer on the sidelines.

Least favorite- Summer. I'm not a hot weather gal. Last summer it was 115 degrees for 10 days and I really couldn't handle it. Everything dies. The hills turn "gold" (brown). Plus, knitted bikini??? Never.

4) You have $100 extra a week - do you spend it on fun incidentals or do you have someone come in and clean your home? Why?

Someone to come clean my home. It probably the only thing Brian and I fight about. I always feel like I'm the one cleaning and he doesn't do anything. That's not completely true. But sometimes I just feel put upon and irritated by the constant disarray of our apartment. Part of this issue is that we live in a pretty small place and we have a lot of stuff. (Something else I'm working on.) If I came home every night to a clean home, I'd be a much calmer person when I walk in the door.

5) You have the opportunity to go on a roadtrip anywhere in North America for free - where do you go?

I've been to all but 5 states- Hawaii, Idaho, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. So, I think I'd take Highway 1 down the coast of California to the 10. Then head East to the three states in the deep South. I'd eat all the fried chicken and BBQ I could get my hands on!

Want to play? Here's the scoop:
1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me." (and
give me your email address if you can to make this
easier on me!)
2. I will respond by emailing you five questions. I
get to pick the questions.
3. You will update your blog with the answers to the
questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to
interview someone else in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you
will ask them five questions.

Green Tweed Heaven

I took a long lunch today to retrieve a package that the Post Office was holding for me. It was from my Secret Pal, The Masked Chicken!

Secret Pal Package 4

Check it out! Green tweed yarn, a notebook, bath fizzies, a handpainted box, tea, a CD to run to, tamarind candy that I'm curious to try, fruit dip, a candle, beads, the coolest bamboo pen, and a great note of encouragement for grad school. And it's all green! That's my favorite color!

Check out the awesome yarn...

Tahki New Tweed- Sage

Seriously, this is the PERFECT color. Sage green and delicious! It's a merino, silk, cotton, and viscose blend. And it's really soft. Now.... what to make??? I want to cast on but it has to be something really special.

This round of SP on the knitty boards is coming to an end. And I have to say, I've been incredibly lucky to have such a great upstream pal. She's unbelievably generous and has taken the time to email and comment a lot. Thanks Masked Chicken! You're the best.

That's Right

I did get 18 skeins of Blue Moon Fiber Arts yarn in the mail. I'm trying to photograph them on the sly. But it's tough to just whip out a huge box of yarn without Brian questioning my spending habits.

Hopefully by the end of the week I can get it all pulled together to show you. It's pretty great.

In the meantime, here's my latest Loopy Ewe order.

Schaefer Yarn- Lola Jewel of the Nile

Schaefer Lola in Jewel of the Nile

Fleece Artist- Sea Wool Renaissance

Fleece Artist Seawool in Renaissance

It's been an extravaganza of yarn around here lately. I'm so in stock up mode. I know that once school starts, there'll be no more yarn buying. I'm making sure there's enough to get me through the long year.

Goals Update- Week 16

I haven't done a proper Goals Update in a while. And since I was a little hung over this morning, I haven't been as productive as I'd hoped.

1. Knit from the Stash- I'm taking Sheri at The Loopy Ewe up on her Q2 Challenge. So I'm knitting baby hats like crazy.

Here's what I have so far...

Hats for China

The 2 in lavender are in Bernat Cottontots. The Navy is RYC Cashsoft Aran. I have a yellow one on the needles currently. I hope to finish that one by the end of the night.

I have about 4 skeins of Bernat Cottontots left over from crazy baby knitting last year. So there will be purple, blue, pink, yellow, and cream hats. Although, I don't have much cream left so there might be a 2 toned one. I'm thinking there will be at least 10 in all. This is a potential stash reduction of 700 yards!

I won't mention the 18 skeins of yarn from Blue Moon Fiber Arts that showed up yesterday. In my defense, I had a coupon!

2. Grad School- The work count down is on. Only 2 weeks before I put in my notice and 2 weeks more after that. Yikes! So exciting and scary. I signed my loan forms this week. And I'm sending in my final paperwork tomorrow.

3. Thin for Thirty- I've walked 17.5 miles toward my 100 for Runagogo. But no weight lost. I really think the change in my career, while currently stressing me out, will be helpful with my weight loss. No Mexican day at work. No lunches out. No breakfast burritos. Plus lots of standing and walking. Much better for my figure than 8-10 hours in front of a computer every day.

4. Save Money- Things are looking good. I took out a big loan for school but I don't think I'll need it all. Brian is wonderful and tells me all the time not to worry. We'll be fine. It's just hard to imagine not having income. But I'm very lucky to have a husband and family who won't let us go hungry.

I'll leave you today with a gratuitous kitty shot. They were cuddling in the ugly (but comfortable) lazy boy yesterday. And it was too cute not to share.

Kitties Snuggling

Eva on the left. Milo on the right.

Have a good rest of the weekend!

Standard Saturday

I ran errands all morning. Nothing too exciting. I finally took the vacuum to the repair shop and when I walked in, the guy said, "your cord needs help." Yeah- it's a shock hazard. Trust me.

I also went to the Post Office. They were holding this little beauty for me.

Sundara Yarn- Cherry Blossom

Sundara Yarn- Cherry Blossom. She did a special run of this to celebrate her business anniversary.

I have some weird pink and brown obsession going at the moment. No kidding- I counted enough pink and brown yarn to make 6 pairs of socks.

I'm not really a pink girl to begin with! But something about pink and brown or blue and brown that is really attractive to me. Of all 6, this skein might be my favorite.

Another package landed in my mailbox this week, all the way from The Knittery in Australia. I saw a picture of this yarn on the Black Dog Knits blog and I could not resist.

The Knittery- Merino Cashmere Orchid

Merino/Cashmere in Orchid

The Knittery- Merino Cashmere Chocolate Royale

Merino/Cashmere in Chocolate Royale

The Knittery- Merino Cashmere Cherries

Merino/Cashmere in Cherries

This yarn is so lovely, I'm not sure I'll be able to knit it up. The depth of colors and the sophistication of the color combinations is just gorgeous. I would never think to put purple and brown together but it works perfectly. And the Cherries color is just the perfect subtly varigated deep red. Love them.

Now, I need to get some knitting done.

Friday FO

Yeah- I bet you thought I forgot all this yarn was supposed to make things. Just to prove you wrong, here's an FO.

Vestee- Done

Pattern: Vestee from Knitty- 12 month size
Yarn: Classic Elite Premiere in Eggplant- 3 balls
Needles: KP Options (yay!) Size 6
Date Started: 4/8/07
Date Finished: 4/15/07
Mods: None- But the pattern allows for variation. I made the short sleeve, hooded version. There are options for long sleeves and/or a shawl collar
Recipient: My Faux Nephew. He isn't born yet and he has a sweater in 12 month size. I hope purple is OK for a boy. Eggplant is one of my college colors. And since his parents went there too, it'll be a perfect sweater for Homecoming.

I love this yarn. It's super soft and (apparently) machine washable. My only complaint was the amount of fuzz that came off my my yarn while I knit. Hopefully that doesn't mean there will be a lot of fuzzing on the garment.

I soaked this in Eucalan and tossed it in the dryer once it was damp. The dryer didn't seem to cause any issues.

Vestee- Screw Up

I f'ed up the three needle bind off by doing it on the wrong side. The seam should be on the inside of the hood. But I'm going with "design feature" on this one.

Since no one in my house is the size of a 12 month old, I had to rely on the Chicken to model. Don't mind the nose. He's in the Barnyard Protection Program*.

Vestee- Front Model

Vestee- Back Model

This is also my first project on the KP Options and I couldn't be happier. As long as the join is really tight, these are a dream to knit with.

*See what a long work week and a couple of beers will do??? Makes me all silly.

Ode to My New Swift

To the Tune of James Blunt's "You're Beautiful"

My stash is lovely.
My stash is pure.
But it's all in skeins.
Of that I'm sure.
You smiled at me on JoAnn's.
You were priced a little high.
But I won't worry a bit about that,
Just print the coupon before I buy.

(Chorus):
You're beautiful. You're functional.
You're practical, it's true.
Tangled skeins won't cause me pains,
And I know just what to do,
'Cause I won't wind yarn without you.

Yes, you caught my eye,
As I clicked on by.
You could see from my face that I was,
Frustrated by
The constant fight with a tangle of "string".
But with you I'll never go through that again.

(Chorus):
You're beautiful. You're useful.
You're helpful, it's true.
Tangled skeins won't cause me pains,
And I know just what to do,
'Cause I won't wind yarn without you.

(La-la-la-la, La-la-la-la, La-la-la-la, Laaah)

(Chorus):
You're beautiful. You're valuable.
You're beneficial, it's true.
The knitting goddess has a smile on her face
I won't curse her if I'm using you.

I hope this becomes the truth...
I will knit more using you.

The Swift

Edited to add a picture. The set up isn't great. But the swift definitely is!

Not Much to Say Today

Although I do have an FO! I finished the Vestee sweater too late to get a good picture of it. It's really cute though. And I'm glad I finished up as the faux nephew is going to make his debut any day now. The Classic Elite Premiere fuzzed a LOT while knitting. Hopefully, this won't be too big of an issue once I wash it.

Speaking of water, hopefully you East Coast people are OK and not to worse for wear.

I played with the drop spindle a little. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be something I'm naturally good at. Practice will make perfect with that one.

And I really don't want to go to work tomorrow. But that's standard now that I know I'm leaving.

That's about it. Not too exciting. Maybe there'll be more exciting things to talk about later this week.

Saturday Show Off

I can't believe I haven't posted all week! Where does the time go???

All the prizes have been sent out except for Chemgrrl. I'm still waiting for her prize to arrive. Silly USPS! The package was mailed on April 1. But the USPS can't seem to find it. It's really frustrating since this is the 3rd thing that has gone missing this month. The other 2 are my March Sampler and a Lime-N-Violet package from my upstream SP. Very frustrating. Hopefully they'll track it down. I'm really bummed about this.

Here's what's actually arrived in the mail this week.

The first 3 are from a Destash Ad- There was a 4th skein but it was sent out as a prize. So no pic.

STR Lightweight- Jingle Bell Rock

STR Lightweight in Jingle Bell Rock. I know it's out of season but it's so pretty.

STR Lightweight- Carbon Dating

STR Lightweight in Carbon Dating. I love this color. It may have to become a hat or a scarf.

By the way, did you know BFMA has STR medium weight back instock and ready to dye??? Not that I'm an enabler...

Lisa Souza Sock! Merino- Berry Poppins

Lisa Souza Sock! Merino in Berry Poppins. Lime-N-Violet weren't kidding. This is seriously lovely.

Finally, I saw some Hello Yarn on Peaknit's blog and I had to go check it out.

Hello Yarn- Hot Peppers

This is Hot Peppers. I love the red and black and yellow. It makes me think of roasted chili peppers that my mom had on a wreath in our kitchen.

I'm 1/2 way through the raglan decreases for Vestee. It's coming out really cute in Classic Elite Premiere. My faux nephew is going to be so spoiled!

Also in the way of news, did you hear The Loopy Ewe is going to carry lace weight!?!?!?! Squee!

That's it for today. It's grey and rainy which is putting a damper on my walk today. I guess I'll just hit the gym later. Sigh.

And the Winners Are...

First I want to say thank you so much to everyone who entered! There were 36 entries. Your guesses ranged from 0 to 53.

But the answer is 19.

Congrats to the CBknits80 who hit the answer right on the nose! (Do you have a blog? I couldn't find it to link it.)

Jen was close at 18. And there was a tie for third with Jo and Chemgrrl coming in at 17 books each. So I'll go up to 4 winners.

I do have to say that Weezalana's entry named all my knitting, sewing, and crochet books. That took some serious stalking on the knitty boards and this blog. So she gets a prize for extra effort!

CBKnits80 gets first pick of the prizes. And I think I've contacted all of you one way or another since blogger doesn't let me email you back from the comments. UGH!

I'm not going to talk about Goals today. There isn't much to tell and I don't want to bore you.

But I will show you what a serious yarn addiction will get you...

Loopie Groupie

I'm a Loopie Groupie! On your 6th order, Sheri hooks you up with an awesome tote, loopy kisses, some Soak samples, and a free skein of yarn! How cool is that?!??!! I'm ignoring the fact that it means I've spent entirely too much money there.

Finally, here's the list of my books if you are interested.

2. Wrap Style by Pam Allen and Ann Budd
3. The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns by Ann Budd

Saturday Stash Enhancement

3 orders arrived here this week.

First, from the Loopy Ewe.

Yarn Pirate- Clementine

Yarn Pirate in Clementine- I had a skein of this and traded it away for something I needed at Christmas. What was I thinking??? I love this yarn. So I was lucky to snag some when Sheri updated last week.

Schaeffer Anne- Sizzle

Schaeffer Anne in Sizzle. This yarn is so lovely, soft and cuddly.

Cider Moon Glacier- June Carter

Cider Moon in June Carter- I love this yarn. It's so awesome. Squishy. Soft. Great color. Love it!

Now from the Sweet Sheep-

Seacoast Handpainted- Cherry Fizz

Seacoast Handpainted Panda in Cherry Fizz- It's a merino, bamboo, and nylon blend. Sheri sold out of it so I had to go through my Canadian supplier.

Colinette Jitterbug- Bright Charcoal

Colinette Jitterbug in Bright Charcoal- This is my first skein of this yarn. I love it. It has the twist of Koigu with the squishiness of STR.

Last but not least, I received the March installment of the Sunshine Yarn Club.

Sunshine Yarns- Deep

Deep- This will be perfect for socks for Brian. Dani included a cute little notepad and some candy. Very cute!

Lest you think I'm only shopping and not knitting, I've got a couple more dishrags done.

And don't forget to enter the knitting book contest. It closes at midnight tonight. Winners will be announced tomorrow!

The Stinky Sponge Solution

I admit it. My kitchen sponges stink. And then, when I use them, my hands stink. I know it's gross but I believe I may have found the solution.

MD Warshcloth- Done

A cotton warshrag from Mason Dixon Knitting.
Maybe with a big stack of these I can get rid of my sponges once and for all.

MD Warshcloth- Close Up

I got a bug in my butt about making these this week. And Joanne's had large balls of Sugar and Cream for $1.79. I bought 5 super bright colors- pink, yellow, blue, orange, and green. Over the next few days I'm going to try to crank out a few more. Next up- pink and orange.

It's Spring and I need a little color in my life!

Vacuum Karma

I'm putting this out into the world and hoping it will come back to me in the form of a new vacuum. Since my old one is on injured reserve currently. I found this on Wendy's blog.

There's a contest to win a Dyson. Click here to find out how.

Please don't be mad if I win. That's karma, baby!

Hopefully, this isn't a scam and no spam comments are a result. That would be bad vacuum karma for the spammers.

The Woodwork

Wow! There are a lot of you out there lurking.

I love that you're entering the contest. And I hope you stick around!

I got my package from the Loopy Ewe today. And the Cider Moon is AWESOME!!!! Pics later this week.

Goals Update- Week 13 and a Contest

Before we get to the goals, let me show you the finished soap.

Green Sage Soap

This is Green Clay and Sage Soap.

Green Sage Soap Closeup

Honey and rose soaps

The Rose and Pink Clay is the top row. Honey Beeswax on the bottom.

Honey and Rose Closeup

I get to smell this loveliness for 4 weeks while it drys in my kitchen. YUM!

Now on to the goals...

1. Thin for Thirty- I'm at the same weight I was when the New Year rolled around. Not good. But I'm recommitting today to both eating better and Runagogo. My family being here doesn't help in this regard either. I had 4 wonderful meals while they were here last week. But 4 nights of 3-4 course meals does not make my pants fit better!

2. Knit from the stash- I'm recommitting here too. My sister wanted to learn to knit. And I'd never been to Imagiknit in SF. The stars aligned last Friday to have a sister's day in the city. Seriously, love this shop. There was a TON of yarn. Great needle selection. And best of all, they were so incredible nice to my sister and I. We had a great day walking around SF from the Ferry Building to the Castro and back. Throw in a great lunch at Zuni Cafe and it was pretty much the perfect day. Abby chose a very bright red yarn and she's doing a K2P2 rib scarf with a garter stitch border. I'll get pics when she's done.

Well, this touched off yarn store fever for me. Last Saturday, I went to Article Pract to get the needles I needed for the Chevron Scarf. Of course, I also picked up the LL Devon I showed you a couple of posts ago.

Finally, I had to drop little sister at the airport on Monday. Coincidentally, Nine Rubies is on the way back to my house from the airport. Seriously, I have a sickness. This was my first time in this shop too. They have a great fireplace and a bunch of ladies were sitting and knitting. Again, everyone was really nice. I picked up some needles and this.

SWTC Tofutsies- 728

South West Trading Company- Tofutsies. I've been wanting to try this for a while. I thought the soy and the chitin would make it stiff. But it's not. It's really soft.

Finally, I bought this for my SP8. But I found something even better for her. So I get to keep it.

Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sport- Red Rover

Lorna's Laces in Red Rover. Yummy!

Since then, I've gone off the deep end with orders from The Sweet Sheep, The Loopy Ewe, and a destash deal or two.

Speaking of destash, my KP Options came yesterday. LOVE them! Nice join. Bendy cable. Sharp tips. Love 'em.

And since it is Flash Your Stash Day... Here's mine. Sock stash. Non-Sock. Yarn I've used. And of course, there's more on the way. I need to listen to more Stash and Burn. My total yardage now stands at 29,698. Not good. Not terrible. But lots of room for improvement.

3. Get in to Grad School- The new is a little better on this front. I got word this week that I was accepted in to my #1 choice. YAY! This is a 3 year program that ends in my being a Family Nurse Practitioner. Crazy, right? Now I just have to figure out the details like financing this, health insurance, and living without an income. You know, the little things! But I'm really excited and know that all your good vibes have helped make this happen!

4. Save Money- Yeah, not so much.

I have been knitting. I'm 2 feet in to my Chevron Scarf. And I need to get back to those Baudelaire's. I'm falling behind in Project Spectrum and Socktopia. And I really haven't even started to knit any of my sock club yarns. I just have to remember that there is no time limit. Knitting is the part of my life that isn't supposed to be scheduled. If only I could get these socks done!

CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT!!!
For sticking with me this past year or so. And especially for getting through my 2 last long posts, it's time for the contest!

I'm stealing this one from Minty.

How many knitting books do I have?

Send an email to nelltje at gmail dot com by next Saturday night at midnight Pacific Coast time with your guess. I'll pick 3 winners.

Prizes-
1 skein of Yarntini in Vintage.
1 skein of Yarn Pirate merino/tencel in Hydrangea
1 skein Lisa Souza Sock! in Emerald City

Thanks for reading and thanks for entering!
